Once we have established a clear vision for the painting over email or phone, we will schedule a time and place for a photo shoot (if possible), where I will take reference photos for 1-2 hours. If you want me to make a painting based on your photos, please email their largest versions to me.
I will use the references and a digital color study to create the paintings. I will then create a mock-up of the portrait and send a photo of it to you via email for approval. Please note that the size of the piece may be slightly adjusted for composition purposes after the photo shoot.
Once everything is finalized, I begin working on the painting. I use the finest paints and materials to make sure that the portrait will be of the highest quality.
If you would like, I can send you work in progress pictures. I will communicate with you often in order to create a beautiful and original piece that captures both the subject's likeness and personality.
There’s a small rule- if you want a good digital or oil piece, then the artist must work from good references. And when I say “good,” I mean of good quality, with decent lighting (like from a window, for example), with the head not looking at the camera (we’re not making an ID photo after all).
You will need to ask someone with a photo camera or with a high resolution phone camera to take a pictures. When we pick a photo, you will need to determine if you want an oil or digital painting, the size of the canvas (it would be best for you to measure where you want it to hang). An oil portrait will take three times the amount of time of a digital piece, which is why it is more expensive.
After that, I will tell you the price of the project, and if that suits you, you will pay half of it up front and half of it after the work is complete.
Commissioned portraits generally take 1-5 months for an Oil Paintings and 2-14 days for Digital to complete depending on their complexity and size. If you live in the area, you can come to my studio to see the finished painting in person. Otherwise, I will email a digital photo to my clients to confirm the completion of the portrait. The remainder of the portrait fee is due upon delivery.
Yes, I have my clients sign a standard portrait commission contract and submit a non-refundable deposit of 50% of the total agreed-upon fee. My contract may be viewed below.
Please see the chart above for a general list of prices. I base my portrait pricing both on size and on how many figures are included in the painting. Sizes listed (and corresponding fees) are approximate and will be adjusted to fit the space where the portrait will hang, the number of subjects, and the complexity of the background. Fees are for the artwork only and do not include travel expenses, state sales tax or shipping.
